For about a decade I’ve been visiting my friend and her family in Chicago every year on the day of Diwali. Every year the festival of Diwali is not only fascinating to my eyes but also to my tummy. Diwali the festival of lights is considered as one of the most important festivals in India.

The celebration of Diwali brings in the same feel that we guys go through, when all family member and friends meet for Thanksgiving back here in the US. All we do during Thanksgiving is cook yummy turkey and share the same with loved ones. However, same is not the case during Diwali celebrations. My neighbors happily cook lots of sweets and snacks and share the same with family and friends living on the block. The warmth offered by this festival of lights is just amazing. Today, I bring to the recipe of my favorite sweet and snack recipe that was shared with me by my Indian friend

The following are the details of the Diwali sweet and snack that you can try your hands:

Recipe To Prepare Khasta Namkeen

Required Ingredients 

  • Ajwain – 1 tsp
  • Corn flour – 3 tbsp
  • Ghee – 250 grams
  • Onion Seeds (Mangrella) – 1 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Maida – 100 grams
  • Water – 3 tbsp

Method To Prepare Khasta Namkeen 

  • First, mixt ajwain, maida, corn flour, onion seeds, and salt (as per one’s taste) in a big bowl
  • Next, add water and ghee to the dry mixture
  • Knead the dough until soft
  • Take the soft dough and make small balls out of it
  • Now, try rolling out every individual dough ball into the shape of a circle
  • Cut each circle into two halves and grease them with ghee
  • Now fold the two separate halves into triangular shape
  • Heat oil in a wok and fry the triangular shapes on shallow heat
  • Dish up your Khasta Namkeen and serve it hot

Recipe To Prepare Kala Jamun

Required Ingredients:

  • Cardamom Powder – 2 cups
  • Grated Khoya – 2 cups
  • Maida – 5 tbsp
  • Sugar – 2 tbsp

Ingredients For Preparing Sugar Syrup:

Sugar – 3 cups

Saffron – 5-10 stands (this is not-mandatory)

Method To Prepare Kala Jamun:

  • Mix cardamom powder, maida, grated khoya, sugar in a big bowl
  • Knead all the above-mentioned ingredients into a soft dough
  • Using the soft dough, try making small balls
  • Heat oil in a wok
  • Ensure that the stove is turned on to medium flame and deep fry the small dough balls, unless they turn golden-dark brown
  • Drain the brown balls off the oil and submerge them for half-hour in the sugar syrup
  • Yay! Your Kala Jamun dish is finally done

How To Prepare Sugar Syrup?

  • Take a large bowl and fill it up with a liter of water and add sugar
  • Bring it to a boil, simmer and wait until the syrup is of thicker consistency (and not runny)
  • Add stands of saffron to the sugar syrup (optional)

Important Note:

Knead the dough until soft and ensure there are no cracks in the dough, or else your Kala Jamuns will break/crack when you fry them

I have tried preparing this dish at home about 4-5 times and finally achieved success about the 6th time when it came to the implementation of the dish. I am sure it would not taste as perfect as what my friend prepares, but I’ve not given up yet. Try it from your end too and let me know the results. Happy Diwali to you!
