Stomach cramps, also known as abdominal pains are extremely painful and disturbing. Every individual has a unique genetic makeup, thus, finding the underlying cause of stomach cramps is crucial to determine how to get rid of these cramps.
Indigestion is one of the most common causes of stomach aches and cramps. Although, there may be various other reasons such as irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, thyroid, food allergies, depression, ulcers, or gastritis causing stomach cramps too. In this article, we will be discussing four home remedies that you may try to get rid of stomach cramps. However, it is advisable to meet your physician if this discomfort persists for a longer duration.
- Fennel Seeds
If your stomach cramps are due to indigestion, inflammation of the stomach, or gastritis, then chewing fennel seeds thoroughly after eating your meal helps in easing the cramps. You will need half to one full teaspoon of fennel seeds for this remedy. Fennel seeds, when chewed, release the volatile oil called “anethole”, which helps in stimulating the secretion of juices to help move things along.
- Lime Juice
If you are having stomach cramps due to inflammation of the stomach, then having a glass of lemon water should help. Squeeze the juice of one fresh lime in a glass of warm water and consume the same after a meal. The high acidity level of the lemon helps in stimulating the production of HCL (Hydrochloric) acid. HCL helps in keeping your system hydrated, running smoothly and flushed.
- Hot Pack
For this remedy, you will need a hot bottle, or a hot pack and a comfortable place to lie down. Heat from the hot water helps in soothing, loosening and relaxing your muscles. So, if you are going through dreadful stomach cramps, all you have to do is place the hot pack/bottle on your stomach and lie down comfortably for a few minutes.
Please note, the hot pack / hot bottle should include water that is warm and comfortable when placed on your stomach (and not burning hot).
- Chamomile Tea
You will need a chamomile tea bag, a teaspoon of honey, and warm water. A glass of chamomile tea works wonders in easing stomach cramps. If you are suffering from gastritis, or inflammation of the stomach, then consuming a cup of warm chamomile tea relaxes and loosens the smooth muscle of the upper digestive track, thus, reducing stomach spasms and cramps.
